[Sugisaki Hana Q&A] Is there anything you do to prepare yourself when speaking in front of a large group of people?

Hana Sugisaki's Flower TOKYO

On the September 27, 2020 (Sunday) broadcast of the TOKYO FM radio program “Sugisaki Hana’s Flower TOKYO” (every Sunday from 8:00 to 8:30).

Sugisaki Hana was answering a listener’s question about “not being good at telling stories with a punch line.”

Sugisaki Hana: 26 years old, Kanagawa Prefecture, radio name “Shopping, Good at, Monopoly” (lol).

…Cool (lol).

Listener email: Good morning, Ohana.

Sugisaki Hana: Good morning.

Listener email: I’m not good at telling stories with a punch line, and I often make the atmosphere awkward. On the September 13 broadcast of “Flower TOKYO,” I heard Ohana’s free talk about Enoki and thought, “She’s a very fluent speaker.”

Sugisaki Hana: …Really (lol)?

Listener mail: Do you use any ingenuity when you turn everyday episodes into free talk?

Sugisaki Hana: I was able to speak fluently during free talk? I was so surprised… Hana waved my hand at me with all her might, but I was like, “No, no, no” (laughs). I guess I still have a long way to go…
Honestly, I never thought she’d say something like that… I was so surprised.
I’m so happy. Thank you.

I understand that. I’m not good at “telling stories with a punch line”… I get nervous when a lot of people ask me about something and I have to talk. I think, “I have to say something funny at the end.”
But it’s because I get so nervous that I end up saying weird things that just don’t make sense, and the atmosphere becomes awkward. I totally get that…
Um… what should I do?

…But on the other hand, it’s like, Now that I think about it… I don’t think I would have thought “I hope they say something interesting” when I’m listening to someone. I’m simply interested in what they’re saying… I wonder. Even if it’s not funny, I think I can enjoy it as a normal “story”. So is it better not to “think too much”?

Hmm. “Ingenuity”? I guess so…
But sometimes I take the time to “organize” what I’m thinking, or to “think again” when I’m doing something normally.
In my case, I think that’s “useful for interviews and stuff”. When I’m doing an interview, I’m not told in advance what I’ll be asked… I often go to the interview location and answer the questions, and sometimes I can answer the questions I’m asked from what I was thinking before the interview.
It’s not that I deliberately “prepared topics” for “free talk” or anything, but I thought that if I organize my thoughts and remember things like “this happened,” then surprisingly, those things might “slip” into my memory and come out right away, stored close by.
I also thought that keeping a diary might be helpful, too.

It would be great if we could both be able to speak in front of everyone comfortably without being nervous.

Let’s do our best together (laughs)!
