Honda Hitomi: Next is from “Hitomi ni Sakurasaku” who lives in Korea.

Listener email: Hello, I’m Korean.
I’m emailing you to talk about food for the New Year holidays.
In Korea, there is nothing special to eat at the end of the year.
But at the beginning of the year, we eat something called tteok (떡).
It’s a soup with flat, round rice cakes and it’s very delicious.
It’s also a common story in Korea that you get one year older for every plate you eat.
So when I was young, I wanted to get older quickly, so I ate a lot.

Honda Hitomi: Eh? ! Wait a minute (laughs) You’re kidding, right? Is that so? !
I didn’t know that if you eat one plate you’ll age one year (lol)
Um, this is my first time celebrating New Year in Korea.
So I wanted to eat something auspicious in the Korean style, so I ordered some tteok for delivery and ate it. And it was really delicious.
So I thought, “Oh, I want to eat this all the time, even when it’s not New Year’s,”
but wow, if you eat this you’ll age one year…? That’s no good (lol)
But the tteok has a very mild seasoning, and I had one with dumplings inside, and it was really delicious.
Thank you for the good information.
