Sakura Miyawaki: Recently, if you’ve been watching my private emails, you know that my favorite things change all the time.
So, what I like now is, well, I’ve liked this for a long time, but I love potatoes, and now.
I’ve especially loved them for a long time, but for some reason I really crave them. Potatoes at random times.
So, before, it was sannakji, and then I got into malatang, but I got tired of malatang pretty quickly (laughs).
I’m not tired of it, but it’s hard to clean up… (laughs) I mean, the smell is strong, so I can’t eat it much.
So, lately I’ve been into potatoes. As for what kind of potatoes I like, well, I don’t know. Potato chips, and what else. Like French fries.
Also, I’ve always loved potatoes in stews.
I also like curries. I love the fluffy potatoes in stews.
And there’s a Korean dish called gamjatang.
The “gamja” in gamjatang means potato in Korean, so gamja is the Korean word for it.
“Tang” means, how do you say it, something like a stew or soup, but when I saw it written as gamjatang, I immediately assumed it was a dish with potatoes as the main ingredient.
And of course, when you look at the picture, there’s a ton of potatoes in it.
There’s a ton of meat and potatoes in it, like a stew.
It’s hard to explain Korean food. Well, if you look up gamjatang, I’m sure you’ll find it, so I want you to take a look at the visual, there was a ton of potatoes in it.
I ordered this thinking I’d be able to eat my fill of potatoes, which I love.
But there were no potatoes in it.
I did some research and found out that the gamja in gamjatang doesn’t mean potato gamja, but the rib part of meat, and it’s spelled and pronounced exactly the same. Even the characters are written the same.
If the characters were different, I would have thought, “Oh, it’s a different gamja,” but because the spelling was all the same, I was really fooled.
At the time, I really kept talking to the gamjatang, asking “Huh… what about potatoes?” Like, “Huh… why aren’t there potatoes? What?” I kept talking to it, saying, “But it’s gamjatang, isn’t it…” It was such a shock.
That’s because I really wanted to eat potatoes, and I was looking for food with potatoes as the main ingredient.
So I finally found Gamjatang, but when I opened it, there were no potatoes in it. It was just my misunderstanding, but there are apparently various theories about this too, but surely no one would think that the gamja in Gamjatang is not potato… I was sad (laughs).
